Minnetonka eighth-grader Aria Lambert was knocked out of the championship bracket after the first match of the state Class AA singles tournament. But she never lost again, winning her way to the consolation title.
Lambert started with a tough loss to Buffalo junior Dana VanBruggen on Friday. VanBruggen started with a 7-5 first-set win, but Lambert answered with a 6-2 second set before VanBruggen closed the match 6-1 in the third set.
Lambert was pushed by St. Cloud Apollo senior Aaryn Anderson in the consolation bracket, but Lambert won a pair of tiebreakers to prevail 7-6, 7-6.
Lambert had a successful Saturday, topping Roseville senior Deborah Barany 6-2, 6-3 and Eastview junior Alexis Brown by the same score for the consolation title.
Whitney Taney of Edina won her third consecutive singles title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Burnsville junior Tooli Wilkins. Taney, a senior, also has a pair of state doubles titles, and was a part of the Hornets’ last five state team championships.
