Chaska's football team is sweating out two-a-day practices this week to get ready for a Saturday scrimmage at Wayzata.

The Hawks kick off the season on Thursday, Aug. 28 at home against Lakeville North.

The second day of the state Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament at Shakopee’s Joe Schleper Stadium had a handful of fine games, punctuated by a big upset.

Savage edged Cold Spring 5-3 on Sunday night to advance to the double-elimination round next weekend.

Savage pitcher Brandon Walczak gave up two runs on seven hits, while striking out eight.

Dundas scored an 8-3 victory over the Chaska Cubs on Saturday at Athletic Park, knocking the home team from the state amateur baseball tournament.

The 2008 State Amateur Baseball Tournament got under way at Chaska's Athletic Park on Thursday, Aug. 14 with Fergus Falls facing Detroit Lakes in the first round of Class C competition.

Fergus Falls won the game 3-2 in the 11th inning, as Alex Conboy singled in Ben Brimhall.

Detroit Lakes tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, thanks to a two-run single by Matt Olson that scored Terry Haus and Phil Kirchner.

The tournament continues at Shakopee and Chaska with Class C action on Friday night.

The Chaska Cubs are a strong team made up of veterans and young players - guys who can do it all, and many who fill small-but-important roles.

But now that the state amateur baseball tournament is near, the team will have some help.

The Cubs drafted three players for the state-tournament run from the Section 3B pool: Shakopee pitcher Tim Theis, Victoria catcher Erik Winegarden and Green Isle pitcher Matt Breyer.

Thanks in part to a young lineup and a set of very tough Section 2-3A teams, Chaska did not complete a 'three-peat' of state volleyball titles last season.

But the Hawks are a year older, and, based on the first coaches' association poll, are the team to beat.

The Hawks are the No. 1-ranked team in the pre-season Class 3A poll, receiving five of the seven first-place votes.

Fellow 2-3A team and defending state champion Shakopee is No. 2. Other 2-3A squads in the poll include Waconia at No. 7 and Eden Prairie, which received votes.

It was not a must-win game, but it would have been nice for the Cubs to pull out the state amateur baseball tournament seeding game on Sunday evening at Jordan.

The Brewers pulled off the see-saw contest 5-4 to clinch the top Section 3B seed going into the Class B tournament, which begins Saturday at Chaska and Shakopee.

The Cubs kick off the tournament with an elimination game against Section 1B champion Dundas at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16 at Athletic Park.

Chaska was down to its last chance on Sunday to qualify for the state amateur baseball tournament it has worked so hard to host.

But the Cubbies came through.

Chaska defeated Green Isle 4-1 Friday night at Athletic Park to grab the second spot out of the Section 3B playoffs.

The Cubs (33-11 overall) now plays Jordan at 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Mini-Met to determine the seeding for the state tournament, which takes place, of course, at Chaska and Shakopee.

The Chaska Cubs had to top Shakopee on Wednesday to have a chance at making the state amateur baseball tournament.

Chaska High School and Stanford University graduate Tim Mattran is making the most of his first NFL Training Camp with the Minnesota Vikings.

Mattran, an offensive lineman, wears No. 68 for the Vikes.

Minnesota's first preseason game is 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8 against Seattle at the Metrodome.
