Event raises money to eliminate cancer as major health issue

One day. One night. Beginning Friday, Aug. 8 at 4:30 p.m. and ending Saturday, Aug. 9 at 6:30 a.m., the sixth annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Lake Minnetonka will race onto the Minnetonka High School track with an important mission: to raise money to work toward eliminating cancer as a major health issue. Money raised by the event will also support much-needed services right here in our community.

Chapel Hill Academy has hired three new teachers. Elisabeth Riley will be the new 1st grade teacher, Jennifer Ahrenholz the new 2nd grade teacher and Steve Hunt the new Jr. High English teacher

Minnetonka, Minn. – In recent nationwide tests of high school students studying French, German and Spanish, a total of 70 Minnetonka High School students received state and national rankings for their language proficiency. Additionally, two students received the top scores in the state.

During the second half of the 2007-08 school year, Minnetonka High School foreign language students took the National Spanish and National German Examinations as well as Le Grand Concours (The National French Contest).

The 2008 Chaska High School varsity cheerleading team participated in a recent weekend camp at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.

More than 20 high school cheer teams attended and Chaska was the proud recipient of the “Superior Team” trophy.

“The girls put in long hours of practice and learned many new stunts and cheers,” CHS cheerleading coach Sue Downs said.

Sarah Ehresman and Katie Walsh were named “All-Star” cheerleaders at the camp.

Boys’ soccer and lacrosse and girls’ soccer and swim and dive teams get new leadership

Four Minnetonka High School athletic teams including boys’and girls’ soccer, girls’ swim and dive and boys’ lacrosse will have new head coaches for the upcoming seasons. The new coaches are:
• Boys’ Soccer – Mike Rogers
• Girls’ Soccer – Jeff Hopkins
• Girls’ Swim and Dive – Gillian McNeal
• Boys’ Lacrosse – Aaron Olivier

All four bring with them extensive coaching experience and familiarity with both the school and the teams they will coach.

Minnetonka Ninth-Graders Score Well on GRAD Writing Test

Ninety-six percent of Minnetonka ninth-graders passed the Graduation-Required Assessment for Diploma (GRAD) writing test on their first attempt with an average score of 3.83. These results beat the statewide results of an 89 percent passing rate and average score of 3.5.

This is the first year students are required to take and pass the GRAD writing test in order to graduate from high school. The GRAD replaced the Basic Skills Test (BST).

Recent Minnetonka High School graduate Lauren Bartelt was honored this month by Minnesota Education Commissioner Alice Seagren for her achievement in theater arts. Bartelt was among 27 high school students to receive Minnesota Scholars of Distinction awards. The award honors students who perform at a highly rigorous level in their specialty area – theater arts, mathematics, science, applied geography or leadership.

A dinner, awards and silent auction is set for 6 p.m.
