DPS: Watch out for deer
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) Office of Traffic Safety reminds motorists that the deer breeding season and crop harvest activity are the primary factors for increased deer movement during the autumn, resulting in a danger to motorists — especially motorcyclists. There were 7,751 deer–vehicle crashes reported to DPS during the last three years, 2008–2010. More than one-third of those crashes took place in October and November ...
COMMENTARY: Tomorrow is another day
By Chere Bork The top of my dryer is the most valuable real estate in my home. I have kept my cholesterol numbers there, a list of the next books I need to buy or obtain from the library, my grocery list, food ads, and Macy’s coupons. For years I had a big envelope on the dryer. I had to take the envelope off the dryer to fold the clothes. Then, put the envelope back on the dryer. Back and forth. Back and forth. And, I do loads of wash a w...
Fledgling debate team has the competition talking
by Unsie Zuege
Debate coach Zach Prax led the debate team’s afterschool meeting with a review of the previous weekend’s debate performance. Alex Wahl and Alice Thompson stood at the front of the room, leading the discussion of what led to the debates they lost. Team members raised their hands, took turns speaking, while Alice made notes on the whiteboard. Every so often, when the discussion veered too far off into the philosophical, the mathematical, or esot...
It’s ‘National Protect Your Identity Week’
Child identity theft is a growing problem, one that’s damaging the unblemished credit reports of children nationwide, according to the Better Business Bureau. Scammers are finding inactive Social Security numbers online – most of which are assigned to children under the age of 18 who have not started using them yet – then selling the numbers under different names to help people establish fake credit. Protecting your child’s identity is someth...
Chanhassen to scale back on number of tennis courts
by Richard Crawford
Facing steep costs to maintain tennis courts throughout the city, the Chanhassen City Council is planning to pare back on the number of courts and rehab court surfaces rather than do full reconstructions. There are currently 28 public courts in the city. Of those, the city owns 13. The tennis courts currently in place across the community represent a significant investment in public infrastructure and are amenities that need to be maintained...
Movie review: '50/50'
by Jeffrey Ray
'50/50' (R) Five stars (of 5) For those of you looking for a Hollywood “triumph of the human spirit” or a sappy love story, “50/50” isn’t the movie for you. “50/50” goes as far from ridiculous as it can and the results are outstanding. “50/50” focuses on Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a clean cut young man who doesn’t drink, smoke, take drugs, or even drive a car for that matter. He runs every morning and he watches what he eats. Naturally, it...

COMMENTARY: ADHD remains bit of a mystery
by Terri O. Johnson
While most Americans have a general awareness of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, unless they have a loved one struggling with it, ADHD often remains a somewhat vague mystery ailment. Dig into the details a bit, and you’ll find the disorder a lot more devastating than you think. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 9.5 percent of American kids aged 4 to 17 have, at some point, been diagnosed with ADHD. The condition...

In search of the Spirit Bear
by Stan Tekiela
Just getting to Shearwater, British Columbia, is an adventure. It is one of many small islands along the B.C. coast. Here is my itinerary: Two flights brought us to Bella Bella, B.C., a small island and population 1,800. The second of these flights, which was the most hair-raising flight I have ever had in all my years of traveling, landed us in pouring rain and no visibility, where we deplaned and crammed into a van that drove us to the boat ...
